Our 2013 Open Competition, for the Cockburn Cup, was judged by Bruce Girdwood. Bruce is convenor of judging for the PSNZ and in charge of ‘judge education’.
Bruce began his session by reminding us that photography is about personal expression or interpretation, and that people will not always agree on the merits of any particular photograph. He went on to explain that, even though there are some features of photography they may be done well or not so well, judges decisions are subjective and personal. He was counselling members present that they may feel aggrieved by some comments. However, in the event, Bruce’s comments were almost invariably positive and encouraging.

Bruce ended with a presentation of some of his own stunning work, including some wonderful shots made with long exposures — two stunning audio visual presentations: one made to the theme of ‘Heavy Metal’ during a workshop with Freeman Patterson (see www.freemanpatterson.com) and one made earlier in Namibia to the theme of ‘Hallelujah’.
Everyone agreed this was a most successful meeting. Congratulations to Carolyn and John on being selected the 2013 Open Competition winners.
