In May 2016 a group of club members spent a few days in the Canterbury High Country staying in shearers’ quarters on the Erewhon High Country Sheep Station.
Erewhon Station is nestled right into the Southern Alps at the confluence of the Havelock and Clyde Rivers in inland Canterbury. On this high country station owners Colin Drummond and Erin Casssie farm merino sheep on steep, virtually inaccessible mountain tops. To get to the sheep Colin and Erin use Clydesdale horses: which they breed as part of their operation.
To say the landscape and the environment is impressive is an understatement of mountainous proportions, as you will see in the video. Watch out for the shots made in about a two minute window when approaching clouds, borne by a Nor’West wind, scattered the rising sunlight to render the Rangitata river bed blood red. Amazing.
